The UK’s Bompas & Parr present funeral jellies….. at Nelson Bros Funeral Home!

One of Australia’s oldest family owned businesses, Nelson Bros Funeral Services, have long been respected as leaders and innovators in their field. In a celebration and exploration of funerals and the traditions around them, Nelson Bros have announced a once in a lifetime event to be held at their historic Williamstown funeral home. Funerals & Food: Inspired by Tradition, will be an exploration of the rituals and traditions surrounding funeral food with the UK’s leading jelly mongers, special guests Bompas & Parr, presenting their funeral jellies and discussing the history and tradition of their exquisite work.

To further explore the theme of traditional and funeral food, fifth generation family member Adrian Nelson, has invited a number of expert guests to explain and explore the traditions of funerals and food across a range of cultures.

How did this unique event come about?

When food lover Adrian heard that the UK-based Bompas & Parr would be coming to Melbourne, he was inspired by the idea of creating a one-off ‘funeral’ event. Aside from the obvious and more sombre aspects of the Nelson family’s work, food also plays an important role in the funereal tradition; Adrian saw this as an opportunity to explore and celebrate food’s historic and modern role in the funeral ritual.

Similarly, Bompas & Parr are renowned for creating historically-inspired and artistic jellies and desserts – including their famous funeral jellies – so the fit is a good, though tantalisingly curious, one. Adrian’s invitation included a 19th century horse drawn hearse, replete with black plumage as headgear, as appropriate for Bompas & Parr’s entrance; clearly this appealed to their dramatic sensibility and they couldn’t refuse.

Guests will be invited to the Nelson Bros’ historic building in Williamstown at 1.45pm on Friday 11th March, and will be treated to an exploration of funerals and food including a tasting of Bompas & Parr’s most delectable funeral jellies and a classic afternoon tea will also be served. And being multicultural Melbourne, a plethora of religions and their foods will be represented at the event, as Nelson Bros caters and provides funeral care for all denominations.

Adrian Nelson said, “At Nelson Bros we pride ourselves on quality and style so I was totally inspired by the work of Bompas & Parr and particularly their work with funeral jellies. I contacted them to float the idea of a one-off event and this obviously appealed to their inquisitive and creative minds, as they agreed! Nelson Bros is delighted to be hosting such innovators in their field as well as our other special guests who will share their own religious and cultural traditions around funerals and food. It promises to be an enlightening and memorable journey, and certainly one of its kind.”

Operating for an impressive 153 years to date, Nelson Bros have provided funeral services to the people of Victoria since the gold rush days. And with a Victorian-era background, who better to pair with than Bompas & Parr, purveyors of fine jellies – as jellies themselves are steeped in Victorian tradition and style.
