Gigs on the wall at gastro pub Hotel Lincoln

While not all Melbourne pubs are band pubs, it doesn’t mean non-gig pubs can’t support the city’s thriving live music venues. That’s the thinking behind a new free exhibition at the non-gig foodie Hotel Lincoln on the city fringe in Carlton.
Focussing on the pub gig, the new Lincoln Arts Project installation is a single large format photographic wall paper exhibition by Pete Davies, titled Live at the Lincoln. It runs to February 1.

Says Sharon Vaughan, guest project curator: “The photographs use motifs that refer to an understanding – one we possibly all share – of pub gigs. Music is a long held tradition with different manifestations; consider opera, folk and rock. Throughout history, many countries have used music for celebration and enjoyment. It can be united with alcohol, and in Australia, it can often be associated with pubs. This association can have good, bad and ugly consequences”.

Pete Davies is a self-taught, passionate photographer. His work, while still considered ‘emerging’ at six years, has the maturity of a seasoned practitioner. Motif and composition sensibilities are confidently refined, revealing Davies participation in the printing and industrial design arenas for most of his professional life. Taking the ordinary, he manipulates accepted reality and presents challenging perceptions of the banal subject. Davies takes pleasure in imparting his passion to other enthusiasts. He does this through teaching photography, judging competitions and as an active member of various interest groups. His exhibition commitments are open to submission for 2012, through the installation’s curator Sharon Vaughan.

The Lincoln Arts Project is a changing two-wall work of contemporary art depicting the history of pubs and the behaviour of patrons and is staged in partnership with the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne.
The project was co-founded by Hotel Lincoln proprietor, Jon Burfurd and Dr Chris McAuliffe, Director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art and current Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University.

“Our aim is to encourage creative reflections on pub culture: the good, the bad and the ugly,” says McAuliffe.

According to Jon Burfurd, the humble corner pub has played a pivotal role in the social development of Melbourne over the past 170 years. The pub has been a community meeting place, an information post and entertainment source for many Melbournians and travellers.
“This project is just a small way to encourage patrons to frequent pubs, to help maintain their position in the tapestry of each local community,” he said.

Each exhibition coincides with one of Melbourne’s calendar of cultural activities, be it; Food and Wine, Arts, major event or Music. This one is linked to Melbourne Music Week (Nov 18-26) but runs to February 1.
