The Spring Graze 1 - 30 September 2013

What better way to shake off the winter blues then get involved with The Spring Graze, part of the Victoria on your Table series of food and wine events across the state.

The Spring Graze welcomes the arrival of spring with more than 50 food and wine events across Victoria this September, from the makers of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival presented by Bank of Melbourne. Now in its fifth year, The Spring Graze celebrates the Put Victoria on Your Table philosophy and pays tribute to Victoria’s new-season produce, from crisp baby vegetables, tender spring lamb and delicate seafood, to soft cheeses and new-release wines.

Union Dining (Richmond) will celebrate traditional food and wine from Siciliy at a six-course provincial lunch; Bright Young Things will host a rollicking spring party at Como House & Garden with a grand dinner matched to Shelmerdine wines (Spring Eccentricity with Bright Young Things, South Yarra); and The Deanery will tempt taste buds with a spring duo of char-grilled octopus matched to Chalmers Fiano (Octonauts to The Deanery, Melbourne).

The season’s hero ingredient, spring lamb, takes centre stage at myriad events across Melbourne. Feast on Venetian style Gippsland lamb at Royal Saxon’s The Venetian Connection (Richmond); tuck into lamb club sandwich teamed with St Ronan’s cider at Brunswick Street Cider House (The Club Cider Experience, Fitzroy); or spend a lazy Sunday afternoon at Taxi Dining Room enjoying their four-course shared spring lunch.

International flavours team up with Victorian produce at San Telmo’s Argentinean spring lamb neck grilled on a Parilla (Poon Boon Spring Lamb Two Ways, Melbourne); Middle Park Hotel’s French Jura-inspired menu (A Graze Through the Jura, Middle Park) and The Newmarket Hotel’s seafood Spring Mexican Fiesta (St Kilda).

Food and wine lovers are invited to venture out of the city and take their pick from more than 20 Spring Graze events in the regions. Breathe in the fresh spring air at Dominique Portet over a game of petanque followed by gourmet pies and a glass of pinot at Petanque, Pies and Pinot (Yarra Valley); fill the hamper with local produce at Pfieffer Wine Farmers’ Market and enjoy live music throughout the day (High Country); or relax with a spring picnic with native flavours at Peppermint Ridge Farm (The Secret Places Picnic, Gippsland).

Spring heralds the release of new vintage wines, so go straight to the source and tour through wineries across the state. Meet the winemakers at Coldstream Hills vineyard and taste new-release wines before settling in for lunch at Bella Vedere (Yarra Valley); join local producers as they battle it out for the winning food and wine match of the day in the Pyrenees (TEN:2:ONE Speed Graze, Mitchell Harris Wine Bar); or venture 20 feet underground to Seppelt’s spectacular Drives for a wine tasting and grazing plate of local produce (Picnic in the Old Barrel Hall, Grampians).
