The inaugural meeting of the Melbourne wine group met in late July 2011 to open a few bottles of wine. Some wine reviews from the evening: 2009 Chateau de Vaux Septentrion Moselle Best white of the night..Apricot & peaches with a hint of hazelnut. Silky & Intense $35+ 2005 Chateau Marquis D'Alesme $80+ A lovely wine. Medium bodied, tight and brooding.. requires much more time. 2002 Chateau Montrose OVERWHELMINGLY WINE OF THE NIGHT $90+ Elegant, lush blackberry evolving to cassis..cherry. Hints of cigarbox, cedar under layers of ripe berry flavours with hints of herb. Lovely mouthfeel; lightly boned, medium finish. 1985 Chateau Palmer $200+ Closed at first. Silky mouthfeel with rich fruit around layers of savoury mushroom and herbs with an excellent finish 1981 Chateau Rieussec, Sauternes $130+ Fragrant nose and a complex palate. Butterscoth, caramel, marmalade, honey and spring flowers with a hint of oak. A great wine but perhaps time to drink up. 1986 Chateau Guiraud, Sauternes $85+ Honeyed, oily texture, caramel, dried fruit but with a hole in the middle palate big enough to drive a truck through Melbourne Fine Wine Enthusiasts meet on a regular basis to share fine wine, great food and a few laughs.
