Roughing It - The Best Places to Camp in Victoria

As much as we love staying in lush hotels, we also appreciate getting back to nature and roughing it with a spot of camping over the holiday period and let’s face it with a pretty blessed when it comes to great camping spots in Australia. (And we never said camping shouldn't be accompanied without beautiful food and wine…)

The swag pictured above is our new prized position at Wine.Food.Hotel – sleeps two people (it’s cosy in there). You simply roll it up and it travels easily on the back of a bike if that’s your thing, or if you’re into horse riding it’s easily transportable that way too, or alternatively just throw it in the boot and you’re away. The Wanderer Swag from Kanga Outdoors retails for only $375 – same price as a night's stay in a lovely hotel.

So when we were discussing places to camp in Victoria this summer with our new Wanderer swag from Kanga Outdoors, we thought we’d take the opportunity to share these with you.

Wine.Food.Hotel's top pick of places to camp around Victoria...

1) Buckland Valley, North East Victoria under the shadow of Mt Buffalo. Just follow the signs at the big roundabout and head up the Buckland Valley till the road turns to dirt and then start looking. Lots of fantastic little spots, right on the river!

2) Abbey Yards, North East Victoria, also within sight of Mt Buffalo, but on the opposite side to the Buckland Valley. Head out Buffalo River Road, past the dam and look for the turnoff to your left. Fantastic camping sites with BBQ and tables/chairs in several places along this road and all right on the river.

3) Wilsons Promontory - Everyone has heard of it but how many of you have actually gone there? The special thing about this spot is that you can just head there and find your own little piece of paradise, there is just that many places to set up. For camping at the beach, this is hard to beat. this should actually qualify forit's own story, there are just that many special little spots here!!

4) Cape Conran - Use Marlo, as your launching point for your exploration of this beautiful part of our state. Plenty to see and do with a great mix of beach and the mountains with excellent facilities and very kid friendly.

5) Lake Catani - On top of Mt Buffalo. While this list may seem slightly skewed towards areas around Mt Buffalo, the Victorian Alps really do offer some of the most amazing and easily accessible camping sites in the country. Lake Catani is just the perfect way to escape the summer heat as it is always at least 10 degrees cooler at the summit than at the base of the mountain. Great camping sites, and right on the beautiful, fish filled Lake Catani itself.

6) Lake Cobbler is also another great option. Scenically beautiful and perfect spot to start the amazing walk to the top of Mt Cobbler.

7) Mulwala Water Ski Club - perfectly positioned on the waterfront of Lake Mulwala and the camping ground is a treat (it is kind of NSW but it's still partly Victoria)

8) Porepunkah Caravan Park, near Bright - ten minute drive from Bright, 15 minute drive to the top of Mt Buffalo. Keep in mind, Bright gets pretty packed during school holidays, but this place is a magic spot right on the Ovens River.

9) Along the Murray River from Yarrawonga to Cobram - there are some great river beaches to put down your swag for the night. In most cases garbage collection and bbq facilities will also be provided.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this list, especially Brendan Whitty and Gary Lachlan.
