Onsen Ma: A Japanese Bathhouse for Body, Mind and Soul in Melbourne's CBD

Step off the busy streets into the serene surrounds of the Onsen Ma bathhouse and garden and immerse yourself in a Japanese bathhouse experience that not only cleanses the body, but also rejuvenates the mind.

Founded by Andrea Borazio, Onsen Ma offers a holistic approach to physical and spiritual wellbeing, in a world where a busy lifestyle often leaves little time for the simple pleasures in life.

Bathhouses were originally built to provide a bathing place for people who did not have a bath in their home, and have since become a popular feature of Japanese culture and provide a peaceful, calming environment.

Onsen Ma offers Melbournians a piece of this authentic Japanese bath experience. Visitors are invited to rinse themselves off before soaking in the bath (heated to 40 degrees) for 10 to 15 minutes. Then they enter a sauna that will further release toxins and clear the pores. The bathing continues as visitors return to the bathtub for a second soak, to make sure the muscles are fully relaxed.

As there are no natural springs in the CBD, Onsen Ma has created the same effect by recycling and filtering water constantly to maintain its purity and cleanliness. This therapeutic water contains plenty of minerals that are considered to have health benefits. Bathing not only cleanses the body, it relaxes and refreshes it, and is considered to refresh the kokoro, or spirit.

Onsen Ma offers Shiatsu (finger pressure) massage sessions to accompany your bath. This traditional form of Japanese massage, where the person being massaged is clothed in a kimono outfit, corrects energy imbalances in the body by applying pressure to specific points. Combined with a Japanese bath, a Shiatsu massage helps reduce muscle tension and relieve pain.

For a romantic hideout special occasion, Onsen Ma also has a private spa with a steam room that can be booked per hour.

Onsen Ma believes a balanced way of life is essential in today’s fast-paced world, which is why the bathhouse presents a sanctuary that provides temporary relief from the world outside.

Onsen Ma also offers a "time zone saving" special from 10am-noon Monday to Friday, where a bath/sauna is $18 per hour, instead of $30.
